Donor Eggs vs Donor Embryos: Understanding Your Options

If you’re exploring donor treatment, you may be deciding between using donor eggs or donor embryos.

While both pathways can help you build your family, there are some important differences.

Donor Eggs

  • The embryo is created using a donor egg and sperm (partner or donor)
  • There may be a genetic connection to one parent (if partner sperm is used)
  • You are involved in the creation of the embryo

To learn more about this pathway, visit our Egg Donor Program

Donor Embryos

  • The embryo has already been created and donated
  • You will carry the pregnancy and give birth
  • The treatment process is typically more straightforward, as the embryo is already available
  • Availability may vary depending on donor embryos and program timelines

Which option is right for you?

There is no single right choice. The best option depends on your medical history, personal preferences and how you feel about the different pathways.

Our team will guide you through these options and help you understand what feels right for you.

To explore your options further, speak with our Donor Coordination Team today.

What is a Donor Embryo?

A donor embryo is an embryo that has been created through IVF and then donated for use by another individual or couple.

This may involve:

  • Embryos donated by patients who have completed their family
  • Embryos created using donor eggs and donor sperm

For many patients, this pathway offers the opportunity to:

  • Carry the pregnancy and give birth
  • Experience early bonding and connection
  • Build a family in a way that feels right for them

Who Might Consider Donor Embryos?

Donor embryos may be an option for patients who:

  • Are unable to use their own eggs and/or sperm
  • Have experienced multiple unsuccessful IVF cycles
  • Have genetic conditions they do not wish to pass on
  • Are single or in a same-sex relationship exploring family-building options

Every situation is unique. Our team will take the time to understand your circumstances and help you explore whether this pathway is right for you.

The Family Fertility Centre Approach

We understand that choosing to use a donor embryo is both a medical and emotional decision.

Our approach is centred around supporting you with clear information, thoughtful guidance and a strong focus on care.

This includes:

  • Careful screening and compliance with Australian regulations
  • A transparent and ethical donor process
  • Dedicated donor coordination support
  • Counselling to help you feel informed and confident in your decision

The Matching Process

If you are eligible for the Donor Embryo Program, our team will guide you through the matching process with care and sensitivity.

This may include:

  • Discussing your preferences and any relevant medical considerations
  • Providing information about available donor embryos
  • Supporting you through the selection and consent process

We aim to create thoughtful matches while respecting the privacy and rights of all parties involved.

Our team will take the time to explain each step, so you feel informed and comfortable as you move forward.

Counselling and Support

Counselling is an important and required part of donor treatment.

You’ll have the opportunity to explore:

  • The emotional and psychological aspects of donor conception
  • Future conversations with your child
  • Legal and ethical considerations

As part of the program, counselling is required for both donors and recipients, with a minimum of two sessions to ensure all aspects are carefully considered.

Our experienced counsellors will support you throughout the process, including during treatment if needed.

Pathway to Donor Embryo Treatment

Accessing donor embryos involves a structured process designed to support the wellbeing of everyone involved.

Donor Preparation

Before embryos can be made available, donors complete a thorough preparation process. This includes:

  • GP referral for the initial appointment
  • Completing donor-related forms
  • Primary investigations including infectious and genetic screening
  • Counselling sessions with an FFC-certified counsellor (in person or online)
  • Genetic counselling where required
  • One to two review appointments to discuss results and complete consent

Recipient Preparation

As a recipient, your preparation focuses on ensuring you are ready for treatment and fully supported in your decision. This includes:

  • GP referral for your initial appointment
  • Donor Program registration following your first consultation
  • Investigations including blood and urine tests, pelvic ultrasound and genetic screening
  • Counselling sessions
  • Genetic counselling and expanded screening where required
  • One to two review appointments to discuss results, complete consent and plan treatment
  • Commencement of your treatment cycle

Timing and Considerations

In some cases, embryos may be subject to a quarantine period.

If embryos have not yet been cleared, there is typically a waiting period of approximately three months after embryo creation. This allows for repeat infectious screening of the donor before embryos can be released for treatment.

Our team will guide you through expected timeframes and keep you informed at every stage.

Legal and Ethical Considerations

In Australia, donor conception is carefully regulated to protect the wellbeing of all parties, including donor-conceived children.

This includes:

  • Donor information being recorded in a central register
  • Future access to identifying information for donor-conceived individuals
  • Strict consent and counselling requirements

We will guide you through these requirements so you feel informed, supported and confident throughout the process.
