Fertility Treatment Using Donor Sperm: Building Your Family

Family Fertility Centre is proud to offer a wide selection of donor sperm, helping individuals and couples of all backgrounds achieve their dream of parenthood.

Using donor sperm is a significant decision. It’s essential to take your time, gather information, and make a choice that aligns with your individual needs and desires. Our dedicated team, which includes a counsellor, fertility specialists, and nurses, are here to provide comprehensive support and information throughout every step of your journey.

What are the benefits of using the Family Fertility Centre for donor sperm?

  • Wide donor selection: We offer a diverse pool of donors from various ethnicities to help you find the perfect match for your family.
  • Rigorous screening: All our donors undergo extensive medical, genetic, and psychological screening to ensure the highest-quality sperm for your treatment.
  • Supportive care: Our experienced counsellor will guide you through the emotional and social considerations of using donor sperm, helping you make informed choices.
  • Treatment options: To maximise your chances of success, we offer a range of fertility treatments, including Donor Insemination and in vitro fertilisation.

Who Can Access Donor Sperm?

Donor sperm can benefit a variety of individuals and couples facing fertility challenges, including:

  • Single women: Women who are not in a relationship but desire to have a child.
  • Same-sex female couples: Couples who want to be genetically related to their child.
  • Heterosexual couples with male infertility: Couples where the male partner has no viable sperm or has a fertility issue.
  • Couples with genetic disorders: Couples who want to avoid passing on a genetic condition to their child.
  • Men who have undergone cancer treatment that may affect their fertility.

Clinic Supplied Donor Options

Our donor sperm is readily available here in Adelaide. We offer the following options:

  • Clinic-recruited donors: Our team carefully screens and evaluates these donors. You can choose a donor based on a profile that contains physical characteristics, medical history, and a personal statement.
  • Known sperm donors: You can choose a friend, relative, or family member as your sperm donor, fostering a personal connection and a sense of support. They will undergo the same screening process as clinic-recruited donors.
  • Overseas donors: We’ve partnered with an American sperm bank and imported a wide selection of donor sperm to Adelaide, expanding options for fertility treatment locally.

A simpler, more cost-effective option

Sourcing donor sperm from interstate or overseas can involve specialised transport and handling, which can add to the overall cost. Using donor sperm already available at our clinic can help reduce or avoid these additional expenses.

Achieving Parenthood: The Donor Sperm Process

  1. Initial consultation: Schedule an appointment with one of our fertility doctors to discuss your specific needs and suitability for using donor sperm.

  4. Treatment plan: Develop a personalised treatment plan with your fertility doctor, tailored to your unique circumstances.

Understanding the Donor Selection Process

Choosing a sperm donor is a significant decision. Our clinic offers a comprehensive donor registry that provides detailed information about each donor, including:

  • Physical characteristics: Height, weight, hair colour, eye colour, etc.
  • Medical history: Genetic testing results, health conditions, etc.
  • Educational background: Academic achievements and professional experience.
  • Personal interests: Hobbies, passions, and lifestyle.

Counseling Support

Our experienced counselor is available to provide emotional support and guidance throughout your fertility journey. They can help you navigate the emotional aspects of using donor sperm, address any concerns, and provide information. It is a requirement that you undergo two councelling sessions when using unonomus spern and three sessions with a known sperm donor.

Financial Considerations

The cost of fertility treatments, including the use of donor sperm, can vary. We offer flexible payment options and can help you understand insurance coverage. Our financial coordinator can provide detailed information on costs and payment plans.

Some Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I meet the donor? In some cases, it’s possible to meet the donor, but this varies depending on the donor’s preference and the specific clinic policies.
  • What is the success rate of using donor sperm? Success rates can vary depending on factors such as the patient’s age, overall health, and the chosen treatment method.
  • How long does the process take? The timeline can vary, but it generally involves several steps, including donor selection, treatment preparation, and monitoring.

Understanding Your Options

When considering conception using donated sperm, there are several treatment options available. Family Fertility Doctor will work closely with you to determine the most suitable treatment based on your individual circumstances.

Key Treatment Options:

  • Intrauterine Insemination: This involves directly placing sperm into the uterus near the time of ovulation. It’s often a simpler and less invasive option compared to IVF.
  • In Vitro Fertilisation: This involves fertilising eggs with sperm in a laboratory, growing them for five to six days and transferring an embryo into the uterus and freezing the remaining ones.
  • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection: This technique is used when sperm have difficulty fertilising eggs naturally. A single sperm is injected directly into an egg.
  • Surrogacy arrangements: In cases where a woman cannot carry a pregnancy, a surrogate can carry the baby to term.

When choosing your treatment options, you may  wish to consider:

  • Your medical history: Pre-existing conditions or previous fertility challenges may influence treatment recommendations.
  • Age and fertility: Your age and overall fertility can impact treatment success rates.
  • Donor sperm selection: Choosing a sperm donor with characteristics that align with your preferences is crucial.
